PhD Student Mountain/Alpine Soils and Global Warming, Zurich

Reckenholz-Tänikon Research Station ART

A PhD position is open for an enthusiastic person interested in the response of high elevation grassland ecosystems to global warming. You will be working in the Air Pollution / Climate Group at Agroscope Reckenholz-Tдnikon Research station ART (http://www.art.admin.ch), one out of three Swiss Federal Research Stations for Agriculture. We are an interdisciplinary group of 15-20 scientists (head Prof. J. Fuhrer) working on the issues of global warming, greenhouse gas emissions, and ecosystem responses to disturbances and use both field experiments and simulation models. The Air Pollution / Climate Group participates in several European research activities.

The project is funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation. The goal is to understand key drivers of soil organic matter accumulation and turnover at higher elevations in order to reduce uncertainties in the estimate of their response to global warming. This will be achieved by taking soil and plant samples along elevation gradients both below and above the treeline. Several analytical methods (isotopes, spectroscopy, respiration measurements) will be applied to improve the understanding of site characteristics and residue quality on organic matter turnover.

The successful candidate will be supervised at ART in Zurich and participate in the PhD-programme of the University of Zurich (group Prof. M.W.I. Schmidt).
